AJ Styles applying the Calf Crusher on Baron Corbin on WWE SmackDown Live

Though many of the Superstars from Raw are still absent on SmackDown, the April 18, 2017 episode of SmackDown Live was far from lacking. But what are the biggest and brightest segments that stood out on the blue show? Here are my top 3 picks for the best segments of the night.

AJ Styles vs. Baron Corbin (w/ Kevin Owens on commentary)

It looks like WWE’s going all in on pushing Baron Corbin as one of the main eventers on the blue brand. I’m fine with that. Corbin was able to show his athleticism. We witnessed how much he’s improved after a little over a year on the main roster. AJ Styles assisted him throughout the match. Also, in true Styles fashion, there were many spots that would make you go, “oh, that looked like it legitimately hurt,” which was fun. Hearing Kevin Owens playfully berate the two “nerds” on commentary was hilarious as well. I’m happy that they didn’t go with the usual finish where the guest commentator gets accidentally hit and interrupts the match.

Six-Pack Challenge Match

“The Land of Opportunity” is not just a buzzword (buzzphrase?) on SmackDown. Shane McMahon proved that by having a match that featured faces you’ll never think of as WWE World Championship contenders. In a chaotic match that had Dolph Ziggler, Luke Harper, Mojo Rawley and Erick Rowan, Jinder Mahal was able to pin the “neurotic” Sami Zayn with the help of the Bollywood Boyz. I’m still sour at how Mahal stiffed the hell out of Finn Balor last week on Raw, but I love random matchups like the one we’ll get with Randy Orton vs. Jinder Mahal.

Charlotte Flair vs. Naomi

Early in the night, we saw Charlotte Flair ask for an opportunity against SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi. Shane McMahon indulged her and setup a non-title match between the two for tonight. Their match was great considering the amount of time they were given. I doubt they’ve been able to work out the spots due to the lack of house show sparring too. There was a lot to be desired in the finish, but I’m hoping they impress in the actual title bout next week.
